Norway Rats

Note: These are all based on real-world rat genetics. As such, there are multiple genes that cause certain mutations (i.e. the three "Rex" genes).

Keep in mind that all these different genes listed interact in a lot of different ways--even though it says non-agouti on the A Locus is usually called "black", depending on other genes it can turn that "black" rat to a lot of pale colors--even white!; this list is provided mostly so you can get an idea of what your character is carrying.

I'm sorry that there are no pictures for this section, but I simply couldn't find enough CC pictures of the various varieties to make this complete. Don't worry, though, images of the various types are only a google search away.

A Locus

A | Wild-type Agouti
Agouti hair has several different bands of color as it travels up the shaft of the hair. If no other modifiers are present, this is the classic "wild-type brown" rat.

am | Melanistic Agouti
This extremely rare gene creates an agouti rat, but the overall color is darkened noticeably.

a | Non-Agouti
Non-agouti hair is one solid color as it travels up the hair shaft. If no other modifiers are present, this creates an entirely black rat.
